RHEL / CentOS Linux: Mount and Access NTFS Partition

To mount and access an NTFS partition on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or CentOS system, you will need to install the NTFS-3G driver, which provides support for NTFS file systems. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Install the required packages:
    sudo yum install ntfs-3g
  2. Create a mount point directory, where the NTFS partition will be mounted:
    sudo mkdir /mnt/ntfs
  3. Use the following command to mount the NTFS partition to the mount point directory:
    sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdX /mnt/ntfs

Replace /dev/sdX with the actual device name of your NTFS partition.

  4. Verify that the NTFS partition has been successfully mounted by using the following command:
    df -h

This will display a list of all mounted file systems, including the NTFS partition.

  5. To access the NTFS partition, simply navigate to the mount point directory:
    cd /mnt/ntfs

By default, the NTFS-3G driver will mount the NTFS partition with read-write permissions. If you need to mount the partition with read-only permissions, you can add the -o ro option to the mount command:

sudo mount -t ntfs-3g -o ro /dev/sdX /mnt/ntfs

You can also add the mount information to the /etc/fstab file to make the NTFS partition persistently available across reboots. To do this, add the following line to the /etc/fstab file:

/dev/sdX /mnt/ntfs ntfs-3g defaults 0 0

Replace /dev/sdX with the actual device name of your NTFS partition.

That’s it! Your NTFS partition should now be accessible on your RHEL or CentOS system.
